BBC News
The BBC reports that
planes are leaving England,
heavy with bombs for
Bagdad.
What would you think about
in the dark sky, your
belly full of
explosives,
traveling in the tide of
history, with only the
noise of the engine
and a few tense
voices between sleep?
Your dark wing shadows
over the fields, in moonlight
of Belgium, and on to
Eastern Europe. Today, I let my
imagination feel pain I am not
qualified to write about.
Tonight, I put the newspaper to
one side, turn off the radio, and open
a book about gardening.
After all, that is what the monks did
in the Dark Ages when the shadow
spanned the world. They thought of
flowers and worked at
illuminations in gold and red and
colors they never knew one day
all peoples of every nation
might see and love.
